Query...

I need to advertise my teaching/ writing/ amateur football 'prowess' online. Can any of the tech-minded, new media savvy types who occasionally read this blog furnish me with tips for establishing a good-looking website without having to pay any money (or the least money possible) or write any HTML?

All advice to the comments box, please, where it will be very gratefully received.

Hi Joe,
Great to hear you're successfully finishing up and heading on European escapades. As far as web-related stuff goes, I'd plump for getting a web host to sell you space on an annual basis (these guys are good and cheap: http://www.hosting365.com/) They're also Irish based, but that doesn't matter too much, as any communication with your hosting company is generally done by email. (There are probably loads of UK ones, I just don't know them offhand.) If you do it via http://www.register365.com/ you can get register the website address and get the hosting for a decent monthly/annual fee. It generally doesn't work out too costly. A minute amount of html writing is needed (just altering text in templates you've copied from other sites, generally - use the 'view source' function on web browsers to copy and paste HTML from other sites). Alternatively there is the Wordpress/blogger blog route, which is generally fine, but doesn't allow quite the same control over shaping your site.

Karl! Good to hear from you.

I feel like a Johnny-Come-Lately on the economic front, but it sounds enormously like a financial and professional necessity. Thanks for your advice. As you say, it doesn't matter where the host is - I'd be more worried about how likely they are to spray advertising dreck all over the site.

Have you found any work exclusively through Dumb Riffs or are you the kind of fearless type who sends unsolicited articles?

How are you, anyway?

I don't think I've actually got any work out of the website - it's kind of just there for anyone who wants to look for old stuff I've done. Generally, you have to hassle people about getting articles in, often by phone. I'm grand - just plugging away on the thesis for the foreseeable future (next few months, at the very least).

Can I suggest you have a look at Easily.co.uk ? They'll sell you domain selection, hosting and web creation templates for a range of annual fees depending on your needs (without adverts). I use them for hosting my private e-mail and I'm happy with the service. And no - I don't have shares in them!

There should be some sort of 'handing in' ceremony, given the time and effort involved in getting to that point but in the absence of an opportunity for a party (shades of Green!) I'll just say well done for getting this far and look forward to seeing you before you head east.
